CONVERSATION GUIDE

Support starts with listening

Hearing many suggestions during the preference period can be tiring. The aim of this conversation is not to make the student choose; it is to understand what the student thinks and what kind of support they need.

A conversation in three steps

01

Ask permission first

Choose a time when you are both available. If you are not ready to talk, you can leave it for another time.

02

Listen without correcting the answer

When one of you speaks, the other should listen without interrupting. Repeat what you heard in your own words and ask whether you understood correctly.

03

Define support together

What does the student need: finding information, planning a visit, or simply being heard? Choose one concrete form of support.

Frequently asked questions

How can I avoid giving advice while listening?

First ask, 'Do you want a suggestion from me, or would you like me to listen?' Instead of correcting the answer, summarize what you heard in your own words and check whether you understood correctly.

You've opened the conversation. Would you like to explore yourself now?

If you have talked about the support you need, you can look at exploring your own interests in Reflektif.
