CONVERSATION GUIDE

First job and internship: let’s talk about expectations

A first internship or job may not meet every expectation at once. This conversation does not match people to careers; it brings together the student’s own goals and the family’s capacity to support them.

A conversation in three steps

01

Listen to the student’s goal

Ask what the student wants to learn from this experience. Do not use other students’ pay or speed as a benchmark.

02

Make the conditions concrete

Talk about what is clear regarding duties, hours, pay, transport, insurance, and school obligations. Verify the conditions with the relevant institution’s official office.

03

Make a time-limited support plan

Set the type and limits of support and a time to review it together. The decision remains with the student; no job or success outcome is guaranteed.

“Let me explain what I want to learn from this experience. Can we talk about our expectations and the support that is possible?”

Family

“I want to hear about your first step without comparing it with anyone else. Which support from me would help?”

Student

“I do not want to decide before the duties, working hours, and insurance conditions are clear.”

Family

“Let’s discuss the duration and limits of our support openly, then reassess together.”

Questions you can ask

  • What will this experience teach me?
  • Which working conditions do I need to verify?
  • When should we review this plan again?

Frequently asked questions

What should the family's role be in a conversation about an internship?

Listen to the student's learning goal and talk openly about the type, limits, and duration of support you can offer. Verify duties, hours, pay, insurance, and school conditions with the authorized office; do not choose the job for the student.
